Hello all,
I am fully aware that we are now dealing with the dog days of summer and thinking about playing hockey is far from our minds, other than those of you that are die hard hockey buffs. However, with this said I am looking to raise the bar once again during our annual Admiral's Cup Floor Hockey Tournament being held in March and the Commandant's Ice Hockey Tournament being held in April.
After learning about and reading about our latest tragedy of those that perished aboard CG 6017 off the coast of La Push Washington, to go along with many other fine Coast Guard families that have also fallen upon similar fate of losing a loved one that may have been the sole provider for their families, so I feel that we as fellow Shipmates need to act in some form or another.
As you know in previous years during our Admiral's Cup Tournament we had raised monies via a 50/50 for fellow Shipmates that had lost loves ones to cancer, automobile accidents, and those Coastguardsmen that were lost on 911.
So I decided to get in touch with The Coast Guard Foundation to see what we could do. I spoke with Mr. Brad Sisley explaining to him that I feel that a bunch of hockey goons, (I apologize to those of you that calling you goons may have offended you). But be that as it may I would like to do is start a 50/50 once again. I truly understand that each year I ask you all for more and more and at times I feel with the cost of running these tournaments are increasing and can give you anything in return like I used to in years past. But yet we have been doing this each year now for the past eighteen years with merely no assistance from the Coast Guard or MWR.... This commitment shows me that "YOU ALL" always step up to make it work.
So starting in 2011 at our 19th Admiral's Cup our 50/50 program will be back. And this year it will be matched by the Coast Guard Foundation, so whatever monies we collect they will match. I know that doesn't seem like much and maybe only a couple hundred dollars.... But as you all know any little bit will help those Coasties that are really in dire need.
So if you have any questions please ask, or visit http://www.coastguardfoundation.org/ for more answers.
Please forward this to all of your players as well if you could,
Thank you,
